Interviews can be daunting at the best of times. Video interviews are becoming more popular year on year, and it’s common for people to feel more nervous or not make as much effort. Here at Adzuna, we’ve compiled together a list of our top 10 tips on how to ace your next Skype interview.
1. Prepare your environment in advance
Unlike normal face to face interviews, this time, your own house is the fancy office where you will be answering the questions. Firstly, decide where your Skype interview will take place – somewhere that not only looks clean and presentable but has the best Wi-Fi connection too. Make sure you take those posters off the wall, make your bed, or clean the dirty dishes behind you. Allow enough time to set everything up before the interview so you’re well prepared.
2. Set up your Skype to look professional
Before you do your interview, make sure you check your Skype name and profile picture first. Change your Skype username if it isn’t clear who you are, or if you have an old username that doesn’t seem appropriate for an interview. For your Skype icon, use a smiley headshot of yourself, just as you would on LinkedIn. Remember, first impressions count so you need to make sure that everything looks professional.
3. Practice with your friends or family
Firstly, make sure your camera is in the correct position for an interview. Tilt it so your head, shoulders, and upper chest are in the frame. Practice video-chatting your friends beforehand so you know what works and what doesn’t. You may need to buy a new microphone or borrow someone else’s!
4. If you can’t Skype at home – go to a coffee shop
If the Wi-Fi is down, or you have home disturbances like a dog that won’t stop barking – do not worry. Head to a coffee shop that you know has quiet areas and a good Wi-Fi connection (check before and get there early). Ensure that you feel comfortable enough doing the interview there and let the interviewer know beforehand with a quick email. Explain that due to technical circumstances you have to go elsewhere for the interview and that you will be using headphones.
5. Plan your answers like you would a normal interview
Do your research on the company and prepare, just as you would with a standard interview. The interviewer will most likely want to know a bit more about yourself, what you know about the company and why you would like to work there. If you get through to the next stage, you can go through your answers in more detail.
6. Have your notes in the interview
A huge positive of having a Skype interview is that you can have your notes in front of you without the interviewer being aware. If you have a valid point you want to make or a question you need to ask, having notes allows you to do a quick skim read if you forget something!
7. Dress to impress!
The saying ‘if you dress the part you will act the part too’ is predominantly true when it comes to video interviews. Put on a nice shirt or a blouse, and you’re more likely to act professional and do your best – just as if you were physically going to an interview. If you’re struggling to know what to wear, our top tips on dressing for an interview will help you decide.
8. Be aware of your body language
It may sound obvious, but it’s sometimes easy to forget the simple things if you are talking to someone through a screen. Facial expressions and body language are crucial in any kind of interview, so make sure you are aware of what you’re doing. Your voice should also be slightly louder and a lot clearer than in normal interviews due to background noise and considering that the connection might not be perfect.
If there are any technical issues during the interview, do not worry! Your interviewer should be used to slight technical problems during video interviews. If you couldn’t quite hear their question, just politely ask them to repeat it. If the problem carries on, you can then bring the issue up as the poor connection may be on their end.
10. Follow up after the interview
Just because this isn’t a normal face-to-face interview, it is still an extremely important stage of the interviewing process. Therefore, remember to follow up with a thank you email and that you look forward to hearing from them. Following all these top tips, you’ll be sure to have a successful Skype interview and be onto the next stage in no time!
