Tourism provides a vital stimulus to Canada’s economic growth. As it stands, tourism represents more of Canada’s GDP than agriculture, forestry and fisheries combined. With 18 million annual visitors, it brings in over $80 billion-a-year.
Just last year, Canada saw a record-breaking number of international arrivals with 20.8 million trips. Having a brilliant world-wide reputation for its welcoming culture, bustling cities, and postcard pretty views, it is easy to see why year after year Canada consistently ranks among the most popular tourist destinations.
Canadians may very well be known as the most polite nation in world, but they sure know how have a good time as well. The country has recently made international headlines for swapping its beloved maple leaf for an altogether different kind of leaf. It seems likely that the legalisation of cannabis will offer yet another great reason to visit Canada.
According to a report by Statistics Canada, tourism currently supports more than 1.8 million jobs, and is adding thousands more every year. In the first half of 2018 alone, 733,800 new jobs were created – an increase of 1.4% compared to the first half of 2017. Adzuna’s data shows that the fastest growing sector was transportation with 25,100 new vacancies. For those interested in pursuing a career in this particular area, it may be worth considering moving to Ontario, as the home of Niagara Falls, is the region with the highest demand.
Accommodation, is the second largest sector which saw the addition of 20,126 new jobs. Once again, most roles are based in Ontario, followed by British Columbia and Quebec.
Lily Valentin, Canada Country Manager at Adzuna observed: “With medical and tech continuously in the press, it’s encouraging to see other sectors in Canada to also be on the rise. Tourism has and continues to provide a safety net by driving job creation in times of overall labour market uncertainty.”
With its unique blend of culture and diversity, as well as world famous historic sites and national parks, we can rest assured that Canada won’t cease to attract visitors anytime soon. As such, we can also expect that employment in tourism will remain in high demand.
