Barrie is a very busy and growing city in southern Ontario with its population fast approaching 200,000 residents. Barrie is located in an area of southern Ontario that is often referred to as the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The Greater Golden Horseshoe is an area named as such because it is a very densely populated area of southern Ontario where there is a lot of employment, industry and transportation throughways. For this reason, some of Barrie's residents actually work in downtown Toronto that is located only 90km away.
Some of the major employers within Barrie include TD Canada Trust, Scotiabank, BMO, IBM and Coca-Cola. There is also a lot of tourism in Barrie every year and this contributes a lot to the local economy. There are many really great boutiques, cafes and pubs in Barrie as well as a very pretty waterfront. Barrielicious, the Barrie Ribfest and Craft Beer Show and the Barrie Waterfront Festival are three of Barrie's great summer festivals whereas skiing, snowboarding and ice fishing are some of Barrie's fun wintertime activities.
