When thinking about the healthcare industry, physicians and nurses are likely to be the first employees who come to mind. However, the healthcare industry is one of the largest in Canada and there are two million dedicated individuals who hold a variety of positions in this field. From doctors to suppliers to administrators, healthcare professionals work together to ensure a strong, healthy, and functioning population. They can be employed in hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, rehabilitation centres, doctors' offices, clinics, community agencies, and in private companies.
Because there are many different positions within the healthcare industry, there are a wide variety of responsibilities. Physicians, for example, need to provide primary and continuing medical care and treat an assortment of common and rare health problems. Nurses, on the other hand, assess patients, implement care, monitor symptoms and conditions, operate medical equipment, and perform many other tasks. Generally, careful attention to detail, high energy, and the ability to work in a team is needed.
