What do Maya Angelou, Gene Simmons, Sting, and Stephen King have in common? They were all teachers! Teachers are charged with the task of molding the minds of today's youth by helping them develop the knowledge, skills, and academic habits they need to succeed in this world. Teachers work with children and youth ranging in age from 4 years old to 18 years old. Teaching is a big commitment. Teachers are required to teach students during regular school hours as well as participate in extracurricular activities such as sports teams. They are often required to work at home in the evenings or on weekends to prepare classroom activities and mark assignments. Teachers must also remain current in their standards and practices and attend regular professional development seminars.
Teachers are responsible for creating and delivering lesson plans that meet local, provincial, and national standards and requirements. They also use various assessment tools to evaluate student's understanding of the material being taught.
Teachers are most commonly employed by public or private schools. Some teachers may work for homeschooling families and others work for tutoring companies. Teachers often specialize in a subject area or grade level.
Teachers must love to teach and interact patiently with children of all learning abilities and personalities. Teachers must also have
- excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- creativity and enthusiasm for the material they are teaching;
- strong leadership, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills; and
- the ability to be resourceful, organized, and be able to respond appropriately in fast paced situations.
