Autonomy Research Engineer

Reporting to the Sensor Fusion Autonomy Lead, you will work on cutting edge technologies within sensor fusion and autonomy applications. Additionally, you will look into the near future for upcoming technologies with the goal of creating ubiquitous positioning and perception systems for practical, real world usage. This position is with Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division, a global technology leader, pioneering end-to-end solutions industry leaders rely on for assured positioning and autonomy on land, sea and air. Within the Autonomy & Positioning division your work will contribute to the operation of our brands NovAtel, AutonomouStuff, VERIPOS and Antcom.

The Location: Hexagon is a global company with locations around the world. This position is based in Calgary, AB.


As Autonomy Research Engineer, responsibilities include:

  • Interface and evaluate various sensors (cameras, GNSS, lidar, radar)
  • Evaluate and experiment with various positioning techniques (SLAM, odometry, etc.) using these sensors
  • Explore and create new developments in sensor fusion technology optimally combining these sensors in a variety of combinations and configurations
  • Create and clearly communicate roadmap plans, technology directions, results and limitations
  • Work with a large global team within A&P and across Hexagon

Must-Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field with 3+ years of work experience
  • Knowledge of estimation and filtering techniques (Kalman filtering, Bayesian Estimation, etc.)
  • Strong C++ and Python coding experience
  • Experience with sensor calibration
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to clearly communicate ideas and solutions to others

Nice-to-Have:

  • M.Sc or Ph.D in fields above. If you have a M.Sc. or Ph.D., the 3 years of working experience will be considered fulfilled
  • Experience with GNSS and/or Inertial Positioning
  • Knowledge of control systems
  • Experience with real time operating systems and embedded firmware development
  • Knowledge of robotic / autonomy middleware (e.g. ROS or other)
