The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead position is primarily focused on leading and growing our mechanical engineering services team, securing, managing, and executing engineering projects while ensuring continuous improvement of quality and performance.

Reporting Structure:

The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead reports directly to the Director of Engineering, and indirectly to the Company Leadership Team (President, Directors, Accounting, and Human Resources).

The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead will work closely with the Director of Engineering regarding workload and resource management, project management processes, project performance, and quality.

The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead will also collaborate with the Director of Business Development on strategic proposals and business development activities.

Technical Expertise:

The successful candidate will have a broad mechanical engineering design expertise, with a specific background in mechanical design for commercial buildings, HVAC, boilers, and distributed energy systems as well as industrial mechanical engineering including pump and piping design. Ideally, the successful candidate will have consulting and industry experience. Pulp and paper experience would be an asset.



  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the Mechanical Engineering Team.

  • Create and maintain a safe, inspiring, and fulfilling work environment for all team members.

  • Be accountable for the overall performance of the Mechanical Engineering Team across all the projects and

    activities it is involved with or leading.

  • Provide cross-functional leadership to ensure Mechanical Engineering Team and other teams operate in a

    cooperative and supportive manner at all times.

  • Contribute to the growth of the company.

    Team Management:

  • Maintain overall team utilization and profitability metrics within expected parameters.

  • Hold weekly team meetings.

  • Attend regular Engineering Group meetings.

  • Forecast projected back log ($) monthly.

  • Submit and approve project invoices monthly.

  • Approve timesheets weekly.

  • Approve expenses monthly.

    Staff Management:

  • Lead Mechanical Engineering Team members performance reviews.

  • Follow up with team members on individual performance and objectives quarterly.

  • Monitor, forecast, and report team workload and resourcing needs.

  • Participate in hiring process for new team members.

    Team Vision and Planning:

  • Develop and execute a vision for the Mechanical Engineering Team.

  • Foster communication between all members of the team, and with other engineering teams.

  • Facilitate skills and knowledge transfer between all members of the team, and with other engineering teams.

  • Provide input to company Leadership Team for quarterly and annual strategic planning.

    Project Management:

  • Act as Senior Project Manager on most mechanical engineering projects.

  • Monitor and report on execution of mechanical engineering projects, continuously assessing critical metrics such as

    quality, client satisfaction, budget utilization, schedule compliance, etc.

  • Monitor and report on performance of mechanical engineering projects, completing and/or delegating completion

    of project scorecards and lessons learned.

  • Drive mechanical engineering projects’ compliance with project management processes and guidelines,

    professional practice guidelines, and quality requirements. Technical Guidance:

  • Mentor and coach team members (local and remote).

  • Provide technical guidance to team members.

  • Coordinate technical assistance from within the Mechanical Engineering Team or through consultants when


  • Organize and coordinate trainings.

    Business Development:

  • Review all mechanical engineering proposals issued by the team.

  • Prepare and lead mechanical engineering and multi-discipline proposals.

  • Prepare engineering cost estimates.

  • Responsible for updating HubSpot CRM for mechanical engineering deals, contacts, etc.

  • Engage with existing and new clients on a regular basis to develop and maintain relationships, ensure client

    satisfaction, identify growth opportunities, etc. Leadership Growth:

  • Grow leadership skills.

  • Work with a mentor, if desired.

  • Qualifications:

  • Engineering degree or technical diploma from a reputable post-secondary institution

  • 12-15 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering and project management

  • Proven experience leading, supervising, and mentoring other mechanical engineers and technicians

  • Registered with EGBC and another jurisdiction’s engineers’ association

    Necessary Skills:

  • Great communication and interpersonal skills – must be comfortable addressing potentially difficult and conflictual issues within project teams, and with the performance of individual staff members.

  • Able to and interested in mentoring and supervising junior engineering staff.

  • Possess a practical problem-solving attitude, be innovative and imaginative, and be able to think outside of the box.

  • Able to manage simultaneous competing priorities on several different projects.

  • Have strong multitasking and work planning skills.

  • Understand and be interested in financial performance monitoring of projects.

  • Understand project engineering cycle from project conception through to operation.

  • Work in an independent manner with little to no supervision, exercising discretion and judgment regarding the

    Mechanical Engineering Team’s day-to-day operation.
