Named for one of the earliest missionaries in the Canadian west, St. Albert is located just northwest of Edmonton on the Sturgeon River. Founded in 1861 by Father Albert Lacombe, the city originally consisted of a simple log chapel used for preaching to the local Cree and Métis peoples. The church, which has grown significantly over the years, still stands as a Provincial Heritage Site located on Mission Hill. But today, St. Albert consists of much more than a chapel. The city is home to about 62,000 residents, with a bustling downtown of theatres, restaurants and St. Albert Place, a hub of many community events.
With a strong Aboriginal heritage, the city includes many street signs written in Cree, English and French. St. Albert also includes the Michif Institute, dedicated to preserving and spreading knowledge of the Métis peoples. As well, the Musée Héritage Museum contains numerous Métis artifacts.
With heritage sites, the St. Albert Botanical Park, and festivals like Rock 'n August, the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Festival and the Northern Alberta International Children's Festival, St. Albert offers history, culture and recreation, all within a short drive of Alberta's capital city.
